| Aufbau des Kurses/Lernziele: |
This course is aimed at students who need English language skills for their academic studies. Throughout the course, we will practice speaking skills in discussions, role plays, debates, and scenarios. We will tackle authentic listening and reading tasks, such as listening to lectures and interviews, and reading texts from a variety of genres, e.g. newspapers, magazines, literature, etc. Students will systematically develop their writing skills, practicing different formats such as writing e-mails, reports, and discursive essays. By recycling previous language knowledge, students will revise basics of grammar that they often have trouble with on that level, such as the correct usage of tenses, modals, and quantifiers. There will also be a strong emphasis on the expansion of vocabulary; the topics covered will be communication, the environment, sports, medicine and transportation. |

This course is aimed at students who want to be able to express themselves more effectively and appropriately in an academic or professional context. Throughout the course, we will practice speaking skills in discussions, role plays, debates, and in scenarios. Students will tackle authentic listening and reading tasks, such as listening to lectures and interviews and reading texts from a variety of genres, e.g. newspapers, magazines, literature, etc. Students will systematically develop their writing skills, practicing different formats such as formal letters, summaries, and discursive essays. By recycling previous language knowledge, students will revise key grammar points, such as the passive, verb patterns, adverb/adjectives, relative clauses, conditionals, etc. Students will also expand their vocabulary base on the following topics: architecture, globalisation, psychology, culture, technology. |
| Leistungsnachweis: |
Continuous assessment and final test (90 minutes). The final written exam can cover all materials assigned in the course, including the material from the workbook. |

| Aufbau des Kurses/Lernziele: |
When studying in English, students have to perform multiple skills simultaneously, for example, listening to lectures, taking notes, and dealing with a new topic and unfamiliar vocabulary. Additionally, academic reading challenges students as they need to understand the key information, the structure and praragraphing of text, the author´s stance, as well as to make inferences themselves. Students are then expected to process and present the new information in written or spoken form.
In this course, students will improve their receptive skills by listening to lectures and taking notes. They will enhance their academic vocabulary and thus improve their skill of reading onger academic texts. Students will hone their productive skills by writing summaries and reports and presenting information to the group, activities in which they can practise their newly acquired vocabulary and structures. |

This course focuses on the essentials of written Academic English, and aims to develop the kind of concision and cohesion necessary for writing essays and papers at a university level. Reviewing academic essay types, as well as describing graphs, trends and diagrams, you will have the opportunity to practise and expand your knowledge of sentence structures, paragraph coherence and overall essay organisation. In addition to in-depth writing practice, guidance will also be given on how to avoid typical writing errors, in order to develop a more accurate and sophisticated style. |

| Aufbau des Kurses/Lernziele: |
This workshop will take you through the main stages of applying for a job in English. It consists of three parts:
Part I: Writing Effective Résumés / CVs provides participants with an understanding of the function and an outline of the components of an effective résumé. Students will go over skills that employers look for and how to emphasize those skills in writing. The course will also deal with cultural differences, including what should be left out of an English résumé and what must be included. This workshop offers attendees an opportunity to have their résumé reviewed by the instructor and their peers.
Part II: Understanding Job Ads and Writing a Winning Cover Letter: This part helps students research job opportunities in companies and understand and assess job ads. Participants will then hone their skills in writing cover letters, tailoring the application to the job offer in question. Again, the cover letters will be reviewed by peers and by the instructor.
Part III: Preparing for a Job Interview in English: Firstly, this includes learning business buzzwords, learning to assess one's own skills, and practicing small talk. The course will also go into cultural differences in the interview process. Towards the end of the workshop, time will be devoted to practicing answers to some of the most frequently asked and most difficult interview questions. And lastly, proper ways to follow-up after the interview will be discussed. Students will then have the chance to practice what they have learned in mock interviews.
After attending all three parts of this workshop, participants will be well-prepared to write an effective appliction and master a job interview in English. |
