| Aufbau des Kurses/Lernziele: |
This course is aimed at students who need English language skills for their academic studies. Throughout the course, we will practice speaking skills in discussions, role plays, debates, and scenarios. We will tackle authentic listening and reading tasks, such as listening to lectures and interviews, and reading texts from a variety of genres, e.g. newspapers, magazines, literature, etc. Students will systematically develop their writing skills, practicing different formats such as writing e-mails, reports, and discursive essays. By recycling previous language knowledge, students will revise basics of grammar that they often have trouble with on that level, such as the correct usage of tenses, modals, and quantifiers. There will also be a strong emphasis on the expansion of vocabulary; the topics covered will be communication, the environment, sports, medicine and transportation. |
| Leistungsnachweis: |

This course is aimed at students who want to be able to express themselves more effectively and appropriately in an academic or professional context. Throughout the course, we will practice speaking skills in discussions, role plays, debates, and in scenarios. We will tackle authentic listening and reading tasks, such as listening to lectures and interviews and reading texts from a variety of genres, e.g. newspapers, magazines, literatures, etc. Students will systematically develop their writing skills, practicing different formats such as formal letters, summaries, and discursive essays. By recycling previous language knowledge, students will revise key grammar points, such as the passive, verb patterns, adverb/adjectives, relative clauses, conditionals, etc. Students will also expand their vocabulary base on the following topics: architecture, globalisation, art, psychology, culture, technology. |
| Leistungsnachweis: |
Continuous assessment and final test (90 minutes). The final written exam can cover all materials assigned in the course, including the material from the workbook. |

| Aufbau des Kurses/Lernziele: |
The IPP consists of a partnership with an American student, two weekend workshops and a communication course. The two intercultural workshops will make you aware of your own cultural values when meeting students from a different culture. The first workshop focuses on increasing one's awareness of their inherent values and cultural norms when dealing with members from a different culture and expands on strategies how to interact sensitively, and how to notice and resolve misunderstandings that are based on cultural differences. The second workshop, which will be offered towards the end of the semester, will wrap up the project and review intercultural problems/ misunderstandings that students may have encountered with their partners in the Intercultural Partnering Project. The communication course will supplement the workshops by focusing on specific communication situations where cultural differences may lead to misunderstandings, e.g. perceiving the communication partner as rude because he/she does not engage in small talk, is too direct, etc. The course will provide an introduction to differing concepts (e.g. concept of time, friendship etc.) and differing communication strategies in both cultures as well as practice in specific situations. It will serve as a discussion forum for intercultural problems/ misunderstandings encountered in the actual partnering project. |
| Leistungsnachweis: |
Active participation in both workshops and the communication course and a final written exam on the Intercultural Partnering Project (90 minutes). |

We will look at how to develop and then write a winning cover letter and résumé. We will go over skills that employers look for and how to emphasize those skills in your writing. We will also talk about cultural differences, including what you should leave out of your English résumé and what must be included.
This workshop offers attendees an opportunity to have their résumé reviewed by the instructor and their peers. Please bring a résumé to the first meeting.
Module II: Preparing for a Job Interview in English: Firstly, this includes learning business buzzwords, learning to access one's own skills, and practicing small talk. We will also talk about cultural differences in the interview process.
We will look at things you should and shouldn't do and things you should and shouldn't say during an interview. We will go over some common mistakes people make when speaking English. We will then go on to interview questions. Time will be devoted to practicing answers to some of the most frequently
asked and most difficult interview questions. And lastly, we will discuss proper ways to follow-up after the interview. Students will then have the chance to practice what they have learned in mock interviews. After attending this workshop, participants will be well-prepared to master a job interview in English. |
